In the year 1979, there were around 1.3 million elephants living across the globe. There are currently only 400,000 of them.

The vast majority of the world's elephants may be found in Africa, where they are facing a growing number of dangers due to the destruction of their natural habitat and poaching. The market for ivory in Hong Kong is one of the most important in the world. It is estimated that the city has supplies of ivory amounting to more than one hundred tonnes.

The majority of this ivory is put to use in carving and other decorative endeavors. The international trade in ivory is one of the factors that is causing elephant numbers to dwindle around the world. It is absolutely necessary that the trade in ivory be put to an end if we are going to be able to safeguard these lovely animals.
