This phenomenon occurs anytime a film or a television series starring Adam Cheng takes place in Hong Kong. The effect was given its name after the Chinese title of the film A Better Tomorrow, which was released in 1986 and starred Cheng.
The movie was a commercial smash at the box office. After the movie's initial release in 1987, the stock market in Hong Kong had a significant decline, which was the first time the effect was noticed. This effect has been seen in other places as well, including the United States, which had a decline in the stock market following the release of the film The Karate Kid Part III (1989), in which Cheng had a starring role.
