Gangster Kidnaps Hong Kong Rich Sons: No Death Penalty

In the 1990s, a criminal in Hong Kong kidnapped the eldest sons of the city's two wealthiest residents. The criminal wanted a ransom of over HKD$2 billion for the boys' safe return. The boys' parents decided to exact vengeance on the criminal by reporting the crime to Chinese police rather than local cops.

This is due to the fact that there is no death punishment in Hong Kong. Chinese authorities eventually apprehended the gangster and condemned him to death. This case exemplifies the Chinese government's strength and control over Hong Kong.
