The original Hong Kong airport, now known as Kai Tak Airport, gained notoriety all over the world for its perilous approach on runway 13, which brought it extremely near to mountains and skyscrapers. Additionally, there were thirteen accidents that resulted in fatalities on that runway. Because of the high risk involved in the approach to runway 13, it became known as the Kai Tak Heart Attack.
Because to the proximity of the approach to the runway to the surrounding mountains and structures, several pilots were had to perform a quick turn just before landing. This curve was so challenging that it frequently contributed to accidents that occurred on the road. In 1995, construction began on a new airport, and the old Kai Tak airport was shut down shortly thereafter.
