Kowloon Walled City was a city in Hong Kong's Kowloon district. In 1994, the city was dismantled, and its 33,000 residents were relocated. Kowloon Walled City was one of the most densely populated areas in the world prior to its demolition, with a population density of nearly 3,000 persons per acre.
The city was constructed on a tiny hill and enclosed by a wall. There were small alleys and passageways throughout the city. The city was separated into two parts: inner city and outer city.
The inner city served as a residential area, while the outer city served as a commercial sector. The Triad gangs and illegal activities including as gambling and prostitution were well-known in Kowloon Walled City. The city was also noted for its terrible sanitation and lack of police enforcement.
The Hong Kong government intended to demolish Kowloon Walled City and move its population in the 1980s. The city's demolition was completed in 1994.
