Shanghai Poster Sparks Outrage in Hong Kong - Twice

When the film Arrival was released in 2016, it outraged Hong Kong social media users because the poster depicted the Shanghai skyline with the Oriental Pearl Tower in it. To correct the situation, a new poster was released in which the entire skyline was replaced with Shanghai's skyline, but the tower remained. This further enraged Hong Kong social media users.

The Oriental Pearl Tower is a television tower in Shanghai and one of the city's most recognisable sights. It is also a representation of the city's skyline. The tower, which stands 1,535 feet tall, was erected in 1994.

It features 11 public-accessible storeys, as well as a revolving restaurant and a skywalk. The tower is illuminated at night and is a famous tourist site. The Hong Kong social media users were outraged because they believe the tower is a symbol of their city and does not belong on the Shanghai skyline.

They also believe that the new poster is inaccurate and does not accurately portray their city.
