Hong Kong Island is an island that can be found in the southeastern region of Hong Kong. It has a population of approximately 7 million people and a land area that is 1,106 square kilometers (or 427 square miles) in size. The city of Hong Kong, which serves as the economic and cultural hub of the territory, is located on the island of Hong Kong.During the Neolithic period, people started to settle on the island for the first time. In later times, during the Qin dynasty, it was included into the Chinese empire and given the name Qin. After being handed over to the British Empire in 1842, the island did not become a crown colony until the following year, in 1843. During World War II, between the years of 1941 and 1945, the island was under Japanese occupation.Following the conclusion of the war, the island was once again under British administration. The island was transferred to China in 1997 so that it could become a part of the territory of Hong Kong.The island may be found in the southeastern region of the Hong Kong territory, directly to the south of where the Kowloon Peninsula begins. To the north is Victoria Harbour, while to the south is the South China Sea. It is flanked on all sides by these bodies of water. The elevation of Victoria Peak, which is the highest point on the island, is 552 meters (1,811 feet) above mean sea level. The island is hilly.Both the Cross-Harbour Tunnel and the Tsing Ma Bridge provide access to the island from the neighboring regions of the New Territories and the Kowloon Peninsula, respectively. In addition, there are a number of ferries that run between the island and the various other areas of Hong Kong.
