Kim Jong Il was an avid moviegoer, and he amassed a collection of more than 20,000 video tapes and DVDs throughout his lifetime. His favourite film series were those based on Friday the 13th, Rambo, Godzilla, and Hong Kong action cinema. He also adored films starring Elizabeth Taylor and any film starring Rambo or Godzilla. It is well known that Kim Jong Il enjoyed watching South Korean soap operas, and it is believed that he dispatched a team of North Korean spies to South Korea in order to obtain copies of these shows.
