The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, also known as the HKZMB or the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, is a 55-kilometer (34-mile) bridge-tunnel system comprised of a series of bridges, tunnels, and an artificial island. The Hong Kong section of the bridge is located within Hong Kong’s territorial waters, while the Zhuhai and Macau sections are located within Mainland China’s territorial waters. The bridge was built over an 11-year period, from 2007 to 2018. It is the world’s longest sea-crossing bridge and, at the time of its construction, the most costly bridge ever built, costing a total of US$20 billion. The bridge was built to connect Hong Kong, Zhuhai, and Macau, as well as to spur economic development in the Pearl River Delta region. It is also considered as a symbol of Mainland China’s developing economic and political links with the Special Administrative Regions of Hong Kong and Macau.Since October 24, 2018, the bridge has been open to traffic.
