It is legal to kill and eat a dog in Canada, Australia, 44 states in the United States, and the United Kingdom, but it is not legal in Taiwan or Hong Kong, among other places. For ages, dogs have been eaten in various regions of the world, including Asia, Africa, and South America. Dog meat is regarded a delicacy in some cultures, while it is viewed as a cheaper alternative to other meats in others.
There is no scientific proof that eating dog meat is dangerous to humans. However, the practise is contentious, and many animal welfare organisations say that killing and eating dogs is cruel and needless. The sale and consumption of dog meat is banned in Taiwan, and those found guilty face fines of up to $25,000.
It is also prohibited in Hong Kong to slaughter dogs for human food, while there is no explicit law prohibiting the consumption of dog meat. The dispute over whether eating dog meat is ethical is unlikely to be addressed anytime soon. However, it is apparent that the practise is dwindling in favour, and an increasing number of people are opposed to eating our furry pets.
