Guangdong Province in China was the location where the SARS epidemic first appeared in 2003. On February 21, a Chinese doctor who was sick with SARS travelled to Hong Kong to attend a wedding there. He had travelled there from mainland China.
Even though he had started exhibiting symptoms, he was still in good enough shape to go sightseeing in the city. He passed away on March 4, and around eighty percent of the cases in Hong Kong have been linked to this doctor. The SARS epidemic that occurred in 2003 was the first and only time the disease appeared in the wild.
The severe acute respiratory syndrome, also known as SARS, was discovered for the first time in Asia in February of 2003. The virus swiftly spread to neighbouring countries, resulting in a widespread outbreak of respiratory illness around the world. Between November 2002 and July 2003, a total of 8,098 cases of SARS were reported from 29 different countries, and 774 people lost their lives as a result of the disease.
