Sergeant Gander's WW2 Heroism

During the Second World War, a Newfoundland dog by the name of Gander served with the Royal Rifles of Canada. He was given the rank of sergeant when he joined the military and was thought to be an important contributor to the team.Gander assisted in the defence of Hong Kong on two separate occasions during the Battle of Hong Kong.

On one occasion, he ran towards the enemy lines while carrying a grenade that had been hurled at injured Canadian soldiers. He had picked up the grenade after it had been thrown at the Canadian soldiers. His valour resulted in the loss of his own life, but also spared the lives of several other men.

The Dickin Medal, which is the highest honour that can be bestowed upon an animal in remembrance of their valour and dedication to their community, was given to Gander after he had passed away. He is one of just three canine companions who have ever been honoured with this medal.
