Only a few tall structures could be found in the city at the beginning of the 20th century. The Central Building, which was finished in 1901, was the city of Hong Kong’s first skyscraper. It was just a little over 50 metres (164 feet) tall. However, when the city experienced a period of fast economic growth in the 1960s and 1970s, Hong Kong’s skyline started to alter quickly. During this time, many tall structures were built, notably the Two International Finance Centre and the Bank of China Tower. The International Commerce Centre and the Shanghai World Financial Centre are two of the world’s tallest skyscrapers, and Hong Kong’s skyline has become really famous on a global scale. One of the most recognisable pictures of the city is its very distinctive skyline.
