Shin Sang-ok, a South Korean film director, and Choi Eun-hee, his ex-wife, were kidnapped in Hong Kong in 1978 and transferred to North Korea on the direct orders of Kim Jong-Il, who was the leader of North Korea at the time. The pair was coerced into establishing a film business for the nation.Shin and Choi eventually were able to flee North Korea in the year 1986, and their experience was depicted in a film from Hollywood titled The Lovers and the Despot in the year 2016.
